Yes, you are not mistaken, this post contains Chinese and I used my beloved iPhone to write every single word as well. I am proud of myself and I think I do deserve a star sticker right? :) It was inspired by an incident inside the MTR and by someone who made me smile a lot recently. What I did here is to translate the Chinese I wrote into English so this will be my first ever bi-lingual post. (Rita, are you going to call me a copycat? HAHA) Not directly on the topic of food but somewhat related in my opinion.

My Original Chinese version:

奇怪的事情多的是，可笑的事更多更妙更值得分享。話說某天回家途中，當我正在金鐘港鐵站月台轉車的幾分鐘內，我差點兒被「人」撞倒，撞到 PK. 有那麼奇怪？重點是那個「人」是一位半熟無 Neck 無腰的小朋友。我也做過一個如此可愛的小胖孩，多得幼稚園教懂了我什麼是 All you can eat lunch before afternoon nap.

胖也是一種福氣，但這種福氣不應該影響到大眾。為什麼要在平台上走？走都算，為什麼是一路走一路大叫？還要不理會人眾直撞？！除了沒禮貌這點外，這次經歷令我發覺現今的小孩真的過肥啦！

在平台上走可能是他們每日運動量最高的活動，回家前到麥當當食番個 happy meal 再加個 Oreo McFlurry. 某程度上家長是過分愛護，令小孩得到最好的，最美的和最肥的結果。

我也肥胖過，開心過，過飽過，辛苦過，忍耐過，小許運動過，廋過，面青口白過，和好 fit 過。罪過罪過。我好明日到食的樂趣但係食都要有個限度，小朋友是不大明白但大人家長請教導一下因為孩子的健康也是你的所有。

我學會了什麼叫食的美德，食不但是一種必要，食也是一種享受。如珍惜你身邊關心∕喜歡的人一樣，要懂得去愛護才能將快樂的時光包起來慢慢的一起享受。小孩子過胖是一個日益嚴重的社會問題，如愛護子女，現在行動也不遲。

My Translated English version.

There are different things in life that are quite weird, many that are funny but definitely worth sharing. One evening on my way home on the MTR, while I was making my transit from one lane to another on the Admiralty station platform, I almost got pushed to the floor by someone. What so weird about that? The someone was a half-grown fat kid without much of a neck or waist. I was once a fat but cute little kid, thanks to the introduction of all you can eat lunch before afternoon nap during my Kindergarten years.

Being chubby is considered a kind of luck in Chinese traditions but such luck should not be to a point that it would affect the safety of the general public! What would the kid right on the platform? Even if you are running, why are you yelling while you are running? Why are you yelling while running without looking out what is in front on you? Aside from the fact that there was a lack of politeness in kids nowadays, this traumatic experience made me realized the seriousness of obesity in our modern society.

Running on the platform may have exceeded the kid's daily exercises quota already hence the short stop at McD before home for a Happy Meal plus a Orea McFlurry. To a certain extend, parents nowadays are over caring / overly protective, providing the best and the fattest at times.

I had been fat, been happy, been very full, been very painful, been very tolerant, been doing little exercises, been thin and been fit. I truly understand the happiness and joy of eating but there should be a limitation / control to eating. Kids may not understand but parents should teach their kids about such control on cravings as best they can for the sake of the kid's health.

Recently, I have learned the arts of eating which means it is a necessity as well as life's enjoyment at the same time. Treasure the people around you especially those you care, those you loved, have to understand how to protect wisely and appropriately in order to cherish the joy of eating with them for many years to come. Obesity among children is becoming a serious social issue in Hong Kong which we must start paying attention. If you are love your kids, act now!

Hong Kong MTR experienced an unanticipated accident (accident is always unexpected / unanticipated for those who actually wonder on that!) whereby one of the power cables was loosen between two major stations during morning rush hour. It caused great inconvenience to many passengers and arranged shuttle to transport strained passengers to the nearest functional station (which is actually 10 mins by foot). Many passengers were furious about the accident (or more accurately on MTR) for many reasons such as (1) late for work, (2) strained in the station for 15 mins??, (3) unable to get on shuttle to the next station which is mere 10 mins by foot or (4) MTR should have notified them earlier.

Wake up and relax my friends! They called it an accident for a reason! Accident happens, stop blaming or complaining and get on with it! Your yelling will not help the matter by a single bit! Although MTR is a semi-public company, I seriously doubt they want such accident to happen right? I noticed that more people nowadays like to blame or complain for the sake of doing so to make themselves feel better to feel "just?"

The above is a piece of art work I came across somewhere in Central. It is part of a promotional art piece for an art event coming up. I liked the idea very much and it shows that creativity can be everywhere and based on everyday items such as fries. It is often how you decode an everyday item or a moment in time that such an idea strikes you. If we fill our minds with work or stressful agendas all day long, we would miss out any encounter with creative ideas. It is rather important to sit back and relax, have a cup of coffee and reset / refresh your mind whenever possible.

This is Admiralty MTR Station in Hong Kong, one of the key platforms to interchange subway lines. More than often you see people running across the platform to catch the leaving train but at the end we all line up together for the door to swing open. We spent a great deal of time waiting, for example: we wait for the bus, we wait for the taxi, we wait the the lift, we wait for food to be served, we wait in line to pay, we wait for our coffee to be made, we wait for our computers to start up, we wait for the phone to reconnect once we exit a lift, we wait the cake to be baked and the list continues. The question is, what do you usually think about when you are in the state of waiting? ...

I am no artist by any standard, I am just someone who started doing Art Jamming recently for fun. After a few sessions, I started to realize how painting and writing can be so similar at times. Ideas and creativity are needed but when I use those two terms, I have no specific definition for them. In other words, I think we should not be bounded by any pre-defined definition of what a good idea is or how to judge a painting. Of course there are some "objective measures" in how to appreciate a piece of work (both writings and paintings) but we should not be fixated within that framework or for a lack of a better word, box. Think of out the box and appreciate art / works the way you like it. Writing what you feel like and painting what you have in mind at that moment. Both writing and painting are ways to express oneself. There is no right or wrong answer, just let yourself go sometimes!

With so many options out there, why on earth would the organizer of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival (which included the commercially sponsored SaSa 2010 Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races held on the 25th July 2010) use these visual ugly barges to fence out the waterfront? I bet it cost dearly to hire those commercially run barge to just anchor there for the 2 -3 days of the event. Again, there are so many other options, more visually appealing options I am sure! Did I mention the organizer of the event is the Home Affairs Department of the HKSAR government? Way to go Hong Kong aka Asia's World City!

It is rather interesting to study the symbol of kiss in different cultures and how such an act is being interpreted based on their social norms and customs. Hong Kong can be summarized in this single picture in my opinion. The Junk symbolizes the old Hong Kong when it was under colonial times as a fishing harbour. The symbol of the junk can be found in many places such as bills of certain value. IFC standing tall at the back represents the current status of Hong Kong as one of the major international finance centers. However, I am pretty sure that it is no news to anyone that the city relies heavily on the finance, property and service sectors for its sustainable growth over the past ... 2 - 3 decades perhaps. Is such status going to change soon? I have no idea, but sooner or later, sooner the better in my opinion. If it is to change, how well will Hong Kong cope? .... to be continued ...

New Project!

I am going to start a new project! I will start posting a photo every day (at least try to ... ) and write something about the picture, be it a story or my feelings of it. I guess this idea is nothing new, I am sure the same concept has been out there many years ago but to me it is a step forward in expressing myself in a way that suited me. Let the project begins!

I came across the following passages while reading about biscuits, the story of producing biscuits to be exact in Alain De Botton's recent work titled: "The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work." I find it quite interesting and true how he relates the topic and expresses his views towards the meaning of work.

When does a job feel meaningful? Whenever it allows us to generate delight or reduce suffering in others. Though we are often taught to think of ourselves as inherently selfish, the longing to act meaningfully in our work seems just as stubborn a part of our make-up as our our appetite for status or money. It is because we are meaning-focused animals rather than simply materialistic ones that we can reasonably contemplated surrendering security for a career helping to bring drinking water to rural Malawi or might quite a job in consumer goods for one in cardiac nursing aware that when it comes to improving the human conditions a well-controlled defibrillator has the edge over even the finest biscuit.

But we should be wary of restricting the idea of meaningful work too tightly, of focusing on the doctors, the nuns of Kolkata or the Old Masters. There can be less exalted ways to contribute to the furtherance of the collective good and it seems that making a perfectly formed stripey chocolate circle which helps fill an impatient stomach in the long morning hours between nine o'clock and noon may deserve its own secure, if microscopic, place in the pantheon of innovations designed to alleviate the burden of existences.

It made me think about my job and how it fits in the bigger picture of life or of the society. Are we or am I somewhat contributing in the microscopic ways for the advancement of culture or society? To be honestly, I have no idea, I am yet to grasp the ability to view things in this direction or perspective but I do want to attempt. I believe the wish to do so is already a big step to begin with. Perhaps minor things I do can make a huge difference in one way or the other.

A quick look around town, retailers and consumers continue to benefit from each other in a magical way with a common denominator we call money. Everyone works hard to earn a living, earn some extra bucks to spend, to satisfying their desire in whatever ways they can afford. I think it is a fair way and no objection to that at all. However, I am sure at some point in life, one would step back and ask oneself the question of "meaning in life / work." Unfortunately, I don't understand why such "reflection" usually happens during times of turmoil or times of turbulence? Such thoughts or ideas should be equally prevalent during boom times am I right?

Conversation with Taxi Driver

I missed my shuttle to home so I took the taxi instead. During this 5 mins ride, my taxi driver in his early 50s I assumed, tried to strike a conversation with me and somehow led to the following ...

Driver: " ... the younger generation of taxi drivers ... fxxk man, they think they are race car drivers, neglecting passenger's safety! It is a shame to the industry, really! ... fxxk! ... it is a service industry afterall! "

Me: "I have to agree with you, the same seems to apply to bus drivers nowadays."

Driver: "Don't you get me started with bus drivers and mini bus drivers! [raising his voice by 3 levels] ... not only do they think they are race car drivers, they just don't give damn about the passengers ... they break like he is driving his own card and I was rocking on the bus, not to mention those elders who can't even stand still properly! ... this is sad you know!"

Me: "yes I know ... I agree ... "

And I do agree with him, how about you? I was speechless because he was so right! Drivers, all kinds of drivers nowadays, are driving as if they are F1 drivers! Complaints are useless ... sigh

I enjoy chatting with taxi drivers for many reasons and the above meaningful exchanges encourage me to do that more often!

Please say hi to my girl friend called Canon.

I take her with me everywhere. I took her to the park one day.

On other special occasions I would take her to see the great skyline of Hong Kong along the Victoria Harbour.

On a sunny day, we like to enjoy the nature together and hug by the warmth of the sunshine.

Although we met only recently, we have been through ups and downs, we live a dangerous life!

Of course I would bring her out to eat and to meet new friends. Sometimes I would join her friends and relatives from the Canon family as well.

Her bigger sister always give her advice but i heard she has a bigger brother called Mark, perhaps I should ring him up for a nice chat soon!

She complains about the lack of eye-wears to match her professional outfit so it is time to shop for some new lens! She prefers lens with a touch of red!

These are traditional Chinese cleaning and kitchen utensils, many are made of bamboo shoots. Hard to find them in Hong Kong nowadays, only in some old parts of Hong Kong perhaps.

Many families in Hong Kong, especially those living in the old part of town, still uses propane stoves for cooking. You will see delivery man riding on bicycle with 5 or even 8 propane tanks skillfully stacked. Then again, at the end, it comes down to brute human force to carry it up the stairs one by one.

The Simple Pleasure in Life ...

Many people ask me why I enjoy cooking recently and it actually took me a moment before I can answer this simple question. I am not sure why to be honest. Sometimes it is hard to explain in details or in words but all I know is that I tend me forget about some of the worries in life when I cook and I am happy when I cook.

It really gives me pleasure and satisfaction when I see my cooking being enjoyed even if it is it is something as simple as fried rice or even scrambled eggs. Perhaps this is the sort of little things in life that many of us are missing out especially when we live in a busy society whereby all we think about is how to make more money and how to climb up the social ladder. Don't get me wrong, those are important and I am trying to achieve more day after day but sometimes I think we should just sit back and think of what really makes us happy and spoil yourself once in a while by indulging into those hobbies or activities.

My food blog is definitely something I enjoyed doing and the only regret is why did I not start it earlier! It gave me more than just simple pleasure but ... satisfactions to some degree. I am usually not the type that would listen to music on the go but recently I notice my new habit of putting on earphones and crank up the music whenever traveling on all types of public transportation in Hong Kong.

After so many years living in Hong Kong, I am still very annoyed and not used to the loudness or outright noise pollution around me. Perhaps it is part of growing that made me very impatient nowadays. Instead of forcing myself to blend into the background noise I now opt to crank up my music and let the noise pollution takes it own course around me.

My recent tug-o-war experience with a stranger on holding the lift door open for a running lady was another common incident and situation I often put myself in. It is a simple gesture that a kid should know but why the heck do people in Hong Kong keep on ignoring??? Is it really that painful to wait for someone? Is it really that important to save the precious few seconds?

Dear iPhone users (including myself), when was the last time you did the following?

Finger swipe across the various pages full of apps icons, back and forth, back and forth and then back and forth again, looking for apps to click on only to realize 1o - 15 mins have lapsed already and you are still undecided? (next stop = destination!)

Stare at the iPhone apps icons and ended up flipping through your camera rolls for the 10 millions times for the same set of pictures taken?

While waiting for the next train the arrive at the boarding platform, you feel bored and take out your phone to snap pictures of incoming train? (and then flip through the pages over and over again???)

I am guilty of all the above!!!
